Virulence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Associated with Production of Protease and Elastase

Abstract
Protease and elastase of Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been implicated in various types of its infection. Lethality and histopathologic effects on liver of the protease and elastase were examined in a mouse model by using four strains of producer and non producer of the enzymes. It was found that production of the protease and elastase had no effect on the mouse lethality but enhanced localized tissue invasiveness of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. And the localized tissue invasiveness had inverse correlation with the systemic dissemination. In addition, there was a close association between the systemic dissemination and the mouse lethality both of which seemed primarily related to lipopolysaccharidal activity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
